Today we announced a partnership with HOM Furniture focused on educating their customers about the Serta mattress products they offer that are made with BiOH polyols. Our soy-based ingredients replace a portion of petroleum-based materials traditionally used in bedding foam. Sales associates in the Sleep Express department have been trained on the soy foam products and can address your questions.

The Serta mattress products with soy-based foam available at HOM furniture can help reduce dependency on oil, leave a smaller environmental footprint, and support new uses for soybeans grown by farmers. You will be able to easily identify the products made with BiOH polyols by looking for the labels and hangtags shown below.

If you live near a HOM Furniture store and you’re considering a new mattress purchase or if you’re just interested to feel/learn about products using soy foam with BiOH polyols, stop by Sleep Express at HOM Furniture! We’d love to hear from you about your shopping experience, product questions, and most importantly….sleep experience after purchasing a Serta mattress from HOM!

With summer time in the northern hemisphere in full swing, we thought it was time to kick off a new helping out challenge… and figured there is no better time than summer to think about water consumption and protecting groundwater. I kept hearing references to “rain gardens” but didn’t know much about them. So I decided to do a little research on the topic – quite interesting!
Rain gardens are made with plants in a small depression and often on a natural slope. They are designed to soak in rain water runoff from roofs, driveways, patios or lawns. Rain gardens are effective in removing chemicals and sediments from the rainwater runoff, and they allow for more water to soak into the ground. We’ve added some additional resources on rain gardens from The Groundwater Foundation in our Green Living section.
We thought that one of the best ways to get motivated to plant a rain garden is to see examples of successful ones…. So we’re asking those folks who have a rain garden to post a picture of their rain garden with some details to our BiOH® Facebook page to help others learn. The first 10 people to post pictures and details of their rain gardens will receive a FREE pair of Classic garden gloves made from recycled plastic water bottles. Spread the word!
For those experts, any rain garden tips to share with others? And for those (like me!) learning about rain gardens, what questions do you have?

Earth Hour is Saturday, March 28 at 8:30pm your local time. Supported by the World Wildlife Fund, the goal this year is for 1 billion people to turn their lights off for one hour during the 2009 Earth Hour. Over 1,000 cities in 81 countries around the globe have already agreed to go dark for Earth Hour including one close to many members of the BiOH team… Minneapolis!
Consider making Earth Hour an event with friends. Light some candles, play games, and enjoy good conversation. Interested? Click below to sign up!

Although I would always support purchasing new furniture from any of the furniture manufacturers using BiOH® polyols (and then reselling or recycling your old furniture of course!), there are ways to make your existing furniture a bit more eco-friendly if it needs updating. Consider reupholstering your furniture with soy foam or selecting more environmentally-friendly fabrics.
I spent the extended President’s Day weekend on a long anticipated project… reupholstering my dining room chairs with Preserve™ foam made with BiOH® polyols. This was not as simple as the DIY websites made it seem! It gave me an even greater respect for the fine craftsmanship that happens daily in furniture manufacturing plants. If you are looking for soy foam for your reupholstering project, I recommend that you reach out to a local upholstering shop to see if you can purchase soy foam from them or you can order the 1835 or 1850 foam from Creative Thread Arts that is made in part with soy-based BiOH ingredients.

The project is complete, and I love the new look and feel. Now I just need to organize a dinner party to truly test the results!
Are you planning an eco-friendly project of your own around the house? We’d love to hear about it – leave us a comment!

As 2009 kicked off a few weeks ago, I surveyed BiOH team members to find out what steps they took in 2008 to lessen their environmental footprint. The responses were quite interesting… from increased use of reusable shopping bags to composting, they did some cool stuff! Here are just a few replies –
“Purchased a rotary mower instead of a gas powered mower”
“Bought more digital music instead of physical copies of records”
“Purchased an energy efficient dish water that uses less energy and less water”
“Pressurized car tires to higher levels for better gas mileage.”
“Switched to eco-friendly cleaning products”
“Signed up for pilot compost collection program”
Plus LOTS of recycling, use of cloth shopping bags, adjusting thermostats, and switching light bulbs. It all adds up! We’re curious…. What did you do?
