A few months ago the BiOH® polyols team tested retail training content in collaboration with the Sustainable Furnishings Council. These two forces joined together and launched an online webinar approach to educating retail sales associates about eco friendly home furnishings.
Furnitureland South, a large retailer in North Carolina was the first to test the content and nearly one hundred associates were trained. After the training, Furnitureland South reported a sales increase on products with BiOH® polyols content and said that the training definitely helped their staff promote these options that many consumers who normally wouldn’t even know exist.
Watch this testimonial to see the impact this training course had on Furnitureland South sales associate Cameron Lindsay.
As part of this test, the store was also provided in-store collateral such as stickers, key message pocket cards and sell sheets. These supplemental materials were successful tools as well. Retail sales professionals understand the importance of training and BiOH® polyols is committed to the investment of sustainable home furnishings product training. We offer this program to any of our partners who incorporate BIOH® polyols so please contact us if you would like more information.

If you have been keeping up with the news lately, you might have noticed a new challenge by ABC World News called Made in America. Part of the feature challanged one Texas family to empty their home of all foreign made products and replace them by purchasing products “Made in America.”
This feature gave exposure to many furniture and bedding industry partners who manufacture American made products every day and who also use BiOH® polyols in their cushioning. One company, Harden Furniture was featured in a video segment talking about how they are responsibly managing the forests that they obtain for their wood products.
Bedding manufactures Sealy and Simmons were listed as well.

One common mistake consumers can often make is thinking that domestically made furniture and appliances cost more money. This segment shows consumers where to purchase products “Made in America” and how they could even save money by doing so! For more information, you can also visit the Made in the USA Foundation.

This week the BiOH® polyols team heads out to the real city that never sleeps to uncover the latest and greatest trends in the furniture and bedding marketplace at the annual Las Vegas Market . World Market Center is the place to see “everything that’s new and unexpected in the world of home furnishings, all in one inspiring venue.”
If you want to be ahead of the curve and know new industry trends before everyone else, just like I do, this market is the place to be. Another great place to trend-spot is by flipping through the pages of Bedroom Magazine, the “Sleep Retailers Magazine.” Pick up a copy of the Winter 2011 issue or visit their website to read a new and exciting article titled Cargill provides Insights on Marketing “Green” featuring Cargill’s BiOH® Business Unit Leader, Yusuf Wazirzada.
Before heading out to Las Vegas, make sure to cast your vote online for the One Good Chair People’s Choice competition sponsored by the Sustainable Furnishings Council and World Market Center Las Vegas. This competition is similar to BiOH® polyols Project Udesign because the designs use sustainable materials but are not upholstered furniture like BiOH® soy-based foam ingredients.
Fingers crossed for a successful market visit that we learn a lot from the bedding industry leaders and maybe we’ll even get a little bit of sleep along the way!

As its -6° F and snowing outside right now in Minnesota, I’ve decided to research tropical vacation destinations. This got me thinking about ways to make my upcoming adventure more eco-friendly. Many of our office staff members prefer to head somewhere warm for the winter as it just gets too unbearable to handle these long, frigid MN winters. In my search for the perfect destination, I discovered some fascinating websites that feature eco-friendly vacations so I thought I’d share them.
Eco Tropical Resorts offers many great locations from the Caribbean to Mexico and as far away as Africa or the Pacific. They have also established the Butterfly Club eco rating for resorts interested in assessing and improving their eco policies and practices.
Is vacationing in the United States more your style? Then check out Eco Smarty. Their site lists the top 5 eco-friendly resorts in the U.S. You will be amazed at the Oil Rig Platform Resort and Spa where reclaimed oil rigs are turned into oceanic eco resorts in the Gulf of Mexico.
Wherever you may roam…if planning a vacation this year, you now have the option and resources to make it an eco-friendly vacation and support sustainable tourism.

As the Cargill offices wind down for the holiday break, I snuck over to our research lab to see what the BiOH® polyols team was up to while their boss was away for the next few weeks. Much to my surprise, the skeleton crew was collaborating back in the “heavy lab” making some fun holiday decorations out of soy-based foam. Watch our video to see what interesting things you can make out of eco-friendly, soy-based BiOH® polyols this holiday season! Feel free to share other soy-based foam ideas that you might have.
Here is what they made:
Holiday tree: cutout form of recycled cardboard topped with soy-based spray foam, spray paint for coloring and a flexible soy-based foam star.
Candy canes: cutout form of recycled cardboard topped with soy-based spray foam and spray paint for coloring.
A special thanks to our lab team for allowing us to sneak up on them. Let’s hope they don’t get into any trouble for having a little holiday fun.

As the holiday season approaches, we thought that we would share some environmentally friendly options to spruce up your season.
Real trees vs artificial. Real trees provide a renewable, recyclable resource. After the holidays, the trees are chipped into biodegradable mulch and used for mulch, trails and many other things.
Decorating. Decorate your house and tree with energy-efficient LED lights. Also put them on timers so they are not on all night.
Greeting cards. Send holiday cards via email or an online greeting card website. If you prefer to send traditional cards, make your own or purchase ones that are on recycled paper. To eliminate envelopes, hand deliver them or send postcards.
Gift wrapping. Instead of wrapping paper use reusable gift bags, magazines or other materials you already have around the house. Reuse bows from last year and old holiday cards as gift tags.
What to do with all those boxes and packing materials afterwards. Recycle all cardboard packaging and other packing materials.
We hope these tips were helpful and if any of our readers have additional ideas please feel free to share! Also, if anyone would like to help us dig out of our snowy tundra here in Minnesota we would welcome the company. Safe travels wherever you may roam and have a wonderful holiday season from your friends at BiOH®.
The BiOH experience offers resources for you to learn and participate in helping communities and the environment. It is brought to you by the BiOH polyols business — a maker of soy-based ingredients for foam. Please explore our site and then share your thoughts with us. We want to hear from you!
