The Incredible Bean
Soybeans are pretty incredible little beans that end up in many products. Farmers sell soybeans to grain elevators that ship the beans to be processed by crushing facilities. When processed, a 60-pound bushel will yield approximately 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. The meal is high in protein and is a major ingredient in livestock feed while the oil is typically used for food. Other smaller soy food markets included soy milk, soy protein, tofu, soy flour and other retail food products. Soybeans are also used in many industrial products.
Other soy resources include:
*The United Soybean Board has compliled many resources including statistics, recipes, and a soy products guide.
*North Carolina Soybean Producers Association has a user-friendly site with detailed information on soy uses.
It All Starts at the Farm. Let us Share your Story.
We know that our story starts at the farm. And we think that every farmer’s story is unique. As part of our blog posts, we want to feature farmers to highlight where the BiOH experience really begins. If you or your family farm, we’d love to hear from you regarding details of your farm (acres/types of crops grown, livestock raised, family history in farming, your favorite aspects of farming, and more.) Checkoff Helps Another 32 Soy-Based Products Reach the Marketplace
ST. LOUIS n Thirty-two new soy-based products hit the market in 2010, thanks in part to the United Soybean Board (USB), which provides funding to industrial partners to research, develop and commercialize products containing soy.
“New uses for soy and new soy-based products mean increasing demand for U.S. soybeans,” says Bob Haselwood, chair of the USB New Uses program and a soybean farmer from Berryton, Kan.
USB works to advance sustainability in part by developing and promoting soy-based products, many of which use soy as a replacement for petroleum-based chemicals, giving them a renewable, environmentally friendly source material.
“So many soy-based products replace petroleum-based chemicals,” says Haselwood. “Soybeans represent a renewable resource. We grow soybeans every year, so they are a renewable feedstock.”
Industrial partners of USB continue to produce an assortment of soy-based products without impacting the world’s food supply. Even with increasing industrial uses of soy, the food industry uses more than 70 percent of the U.S. supply of soybean oil. In addition, oil makes up just 18 percent of a soybean while the remainder consists of protein-rich meal, which goes to feed humans and animals alike across the globe. So soybeans can be used to help feed the world and help replace many petroleum-based chemicals in industrial products. A USB study found that industrial demand for soybean oil for such things as biodiesel and soy-based products increases the supply of soybean meal, which can be used to produce more food.
USB continues to look for industry partners with ideas for new products and technologies that will grow demand for U.S. soy.
“As industries look for more renewable resources, and learn more about new ways to use soy, we will see larger percentages of soy used in new products, and more new products using renewable soy technologies,” says Haselwood.
